Hardstaff shortlisted for top health and safety award

Hardstaff Barriers has been shortlisted for a prestigious award after transforming the company’s health and safety culture and for its commitment to employee wellbeing.

Hardstaff is a finalist in the Health, Safety and Wellbeing category of the Midlands Constructing Excellence Awards 2020, which will be announced on December 1.

Hardstaff Barriers is a multi-award winning manufacturer and supplier of roadside safety barriers and perimeter security systems, and the appointed contractor for the UK Government’s National Barrier Asset (NBA) framework.

The company’s ethos, which is reflected in its ‘For the Love of Lives’ tagline, not only applies to the general public, but also the health and safety of its most valuable asset – its people.

Since acquisition in 2016, under new leadership, the company’s health and safety culture has turned around and gone from strength to strength.

Hardstaff has worked tirelessly to create an outstanding health and safety culture, introducing a number of innovative practices and projects to engage with staff, making them feel valued and protected and giving them a voice.

Initiatives included investing in a two-year leadership programme for every member of staff, using lessons from elite sport and risk industries, such as aviation and the military, with leadership and coaching skills given to employees at all levels.

A ‘speak up’ culture was developed with the introduction of monthly staff forums, the development of a ‘road map’ for staff success and the workforce are encouraged to report issues and submit regular suggestions for improvement.

Staff health and wellbeing is now also ensured by an annual health surveillance by an occupational nurse, the introduction of mental health first-aiders within the company and the monitoring of hand arm vibration syndrome for relevant workers.

Staff also enjoy a healthy working environment with free fruit provided, height adjustable desks, breakout rooms and updated welfare areas, both inside and out.

On site staff are also provided with first-class personal protective equipment and close monitoring by senior managers helps to keep the whole workforce in safe limits.

Hardstaff, which holds Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS) gold status, has also invested heavily in cutting edge technology to improve the efficiency and the safety of its vehicle fleet, protecting the public and its workforce.

Hardstaff provides roadside barriers, hostile vehicle mitigation (HVM) systems, perimeter fencing, concrete security barriers and access gates that are all designed to keep people and property safe.
